Hope still Blooms
October 2020

Feeling a little discomfort? Can you feel doubt swelling beneath your skin? When will it end? How did the virus really begin?⠀

I’ve barely seen the world since it started. I wonder what the aftermath of the first phase felt like, you know, in real life. My curiosity questions me to what it is like to walk amongst the shadows of abandoned city streets? What does it feel like to hear solitary steps echo off the cityscapes cold, hard walls while the winds of uncertainty blows fragments of yesterday’s dreams into deserted corners of dust and debris? I imagine she whistles an unsettling tune as she twists through the tall towers we’ve constructed to keep us safe from inclement possibilities. I question what it would be like to sit upon the empty sidewalks and contemplate the chaos caused. But it’s hard to comprehend catastrophic scenes from the safety of the screen.⠀

The answers elude me because I’ve been locked away for many moons. I’ve been maimed by a mystifying malady, tormented by a twelve-year test. Subjugated, suppressed, forcibly undressed. Stripped of abilities and dreams, oppressed by rigid regimes. But, I’m not the only one. I’m one of millions of minds muted by an insidious illness. For those with myalgic encephalomyelitis, isolation is nothing new. But now, we’ve been joined many others too.⠀

And here we are, within the confines of our compulsory cocoons. Constricted, restricted. Detached, yet connected. Quietly questioning incalculable queries, wondering if a deepening darkness looms, frequently forgetting that we decide whether hope still blooms. Because regardless of which way the winds of circumstance may blow, we can always choose to grow.

With warmth,
Davey
