At what stage does a situation become hopeless? Imagine a world where shadows never dance with the light, a world where there are no sunrises or sunsets. Take a moment. Imagine a life lived without the exchange of warm smiles, without the ability to see joyful expressions on children’s faces or look into a loved one’s eyes. A life of eternal darkness. Blindness.
And what if the blackness was soundless, no voices, no laughter, no music to move the soul. A life lived without the sound of beautiful birdsong, flowing streams or soft winds caressing leaves of the trees. An existence of endless silence. Not even the ability to speak. Blind, deaf, mute. Emptiness? Hopelessness? Complete detachment? How to communicate? How to form friendships? How to create purpose or find fulfilment? Imagine facing all of these problems as a child. This was the reality for a young girl called Helen Keller.
What happened?
She made a choice. She chose to believe, to positively react and adapt. With help, she unlocked her potential through touch. She learnt her first word at the age of seven when her ingenious teacher Anne Sullivan, put Helen’s hand under a water pump and as the water ran, she began spelling “w-a-t-e-r” on her palm with her fingers. After years of immense dedication, Helen learnt to read and write in Braille and communicate by using signals of the deaf-mute. She wrote articles, co-created empowering speeches and authored books to raise awareness of segregation and social inequality. Helen worked with the American Foundation for the Blind, became an advocate for women’s rights and campaigned for the rights of disabled people. She also spent the war visiting army hospitals to give hope and solace to severely wounded and newly disabled soldiers. Her extraordinary determination and remarkable achievements drastically changed others perceptions of limitations, and she redefined the definition of hopelessness for so many. What a gift she was.
