Time to shift perspective.
May 2020
This is really happening, isn’t it? We’re about to enter one of the humankind’s biggest catastrophes. Sounds like a big statement. No, it’s no statement, it’s a question that’s steadily swelling inside the minds of millions.
Humanity’s being tested. Perhaps, the balance is being shifted. Fears mutating, spreading faster than the virus itself. We’ve been seduced by a different shade of distress, not terrorism, wars, wickedness or man-made malevolence, no, these are not our biggest concerns. Livelihoods are being destroyed, lives are being lost, but there be no monsters. There be no mythical creatures roaming the wilderness, or crawling amongst contaminated cityscapes. No, this, this is the time of invisible entities.
We’re being threatened, terrorised by minuscule malignancies, intent on ravaging mankind and its manufactured ecosystems. No thought, no feeling. Just an insatiable appetite for multiplication, no matter the devastation. Sounds a little familiar, doesn’t it? Familiar? We’ve become the planets biggest problem. Humankind’s reached plague proportions and sacrificed the well-being of virtually every single species. Sounds like another negative statement, sadly not. These thoughts, they’re not fabricated from fiction. No, this is fact. We’re destroying the planet we inhabit.
We’re destroying the planet we inhabit.
We? Who? Humans?
Humans, yes, we.
We, we the ones who’ve categorised our species as the most intelligent on earth. How humble. Perhaps, its time to redefine the definition of intelligence? We’ve knowingly caused mass devastation, and we’re on a direct course to causing mass extinction. Undeniable, isn’t it?
This is idiocy.
You, me, they, he…she.
We. We the majority.
We can’t blame ignorance. We can’t claim innocence. We’re not lost within the realms of idealism. We know the facts. But we’ve become governed by greed, blinded by delusional perceptions of need. We’ve broken the balance. Mother Nature’s been a patient provider. She’s given us hints, sent us little clues. But they’ve never been enough. Even when clues became clear signs. Even when signs became screams. We still ignored.
This situation we’re in. What is this? Is this is an act of her fading tolerance. Is this her attempt to hit the reset button? Her virus, her saviour? Is this an act of God? Or, was it bound to happen? Our interconnectedness has become our weakness. We’ve created the perfect conditions for an epidemic to bloom. It’s a predictable happening on an implausible planet. A world which could well be nothing, nothing more, than the equivalent to a particle of dust. No more significant than a speck floating through endless eternity. Unless that speck happens to be home.
This virus, this situation.
It puts life back into perspective, doesn’t it? It rearranges our priorities, it shakes us and makes us reevaluate our values, doesn’t it? It puts humanity back into perspective, doesn’t it? It challenges our perceptions of power, of significance, of status. This, this virus, it has no respect for wealth, wisdom or pretty things. Pucker them lips, flaunt your fame, wield your wealth, whatever, doesn’t matter, isolation ensues. Now is not the time for insignificant displays of ego. Now is the time to go deep. Time to unearth the mental strength, we all posses.
Time to be strong, not only for ourselves, but for others. For those poor souls who suffer the cruelest of consequence. Now is the time to reassess our immediate future and readdress where we are heading, individually, collectively. Whatever the outcome, it’s time to shift perspective. The reality’s raw, but, not all catastrophes are irreversible. We can get through this, together. This, this is not the end, but it could be a new beginning. Keep hope in your heart, hold your loved ones dear. Always remember and never forget, adversity’s created the greatest awakenings yet.
With warmth,
Davey
